Getting Your IEP Ready for Back to School

5 Simple Steps to Start the Year with Confidence

As the back-to-school season approaches, families of children with IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) have more than just school supplies to think about. Making sure your child’s IEP is ready for the year ahead can ease anxiety and ensure everyone starts on the same page.

Whether this is your first time navigating the process or you’ve done it before, these five simple steps can help you prepare and advocate with confidence:

1. Review Your Current IEP

Start by reading through your child’s most recent IEP. Focus on key areas like goals, accommodations, and services. Are the goals still appropriate? Are the supports listed still necessary or is something missing? Taking inventory now helps you know what’s working and what might need adjustment.

2. Prepare Questions and Notes

Even if you’re not due for an IEP meeting right away, it’s helpful to keep a list of notes or concerns. For example:

-              Are the accommodations being followed consistently?

-              Are the current goals too easy or too difficult?

-              Has your child’s diagnosis or behavior changed since the last meeting?

Having these notes ready ensures you’re prepared to advocate effectively when meetings or check-ins come up.

3. Organize Your Documents

Keep your child’s IEP, evaluations, progress reports, and any correspondence in one place. Whether that’s a binder, folder, or digital file. Being able to quickly reference documents makes it easier to track progress and prepare for meetings throughout the year.

4. Prepare an “All About Me” Letter

The “All About Me” Letter is a one-page introduction of your child to their new teacher(s) for the upcoming school year. The goal is to highlight your child’s strengths and share helpful strategies to support a successful start. Include a photo of your child and write the letter from their perspective using their input, when possible, to make it warm and engaging.

5. Find Support and Resources

You don’t have to do this alone. At Grant a Gift Autism Foundation – Ackerman Center, we provide case management and advocacy support to help families like yours navigate the IEP process with confidence. Through our Partner Up workshop series, we offer regular opportunities to learn more about special education, ask questions, and connect with professionals and other families.
