Introducing Craft n Chat: A New Program from the Ackerman Center
At the Ackerman Center, we recognized that many women living with autism spectrum disorder, especially those who are newly exploring their identity, often struggle to find spaces where they feel understood, supported, and accepted. Many have spent years masking, second-guessing their needs, or feeling like they didn’t quite fit in.
That’s why we created Craft n Chat: a welcoming and creative space for women living with autism, or those who are exploring whether they might be, to find connection, community, and self-expression without pressure. Whether you’ve had a formal diagnosis, identify as self-diagnosed, or are just beginning to ask questions about yourself, you belong here.
Why Autism Often Looks Different in Women
For many women on the spectrum, the path to understanding themselves is filled with challenges. Autism in females presents differently than in males, which can lead to it being overlooked or misdiagnosed entirely. Girls and women living with autism are more likely to internalize their struggles, resulting in higher rates of anxiety, depression, and even eating disorders.
Did you know?
80% of girls with autism remain undiagnosed by the age of 18
Many women camouflage their social difficulties, which increases stress and mental health risks
Undiagnosed or unsupported women on the spectrum face increased risks of PTSD, victimization, co-occurring health conditions, and even suicidality.
Crafting a Comfortable Space
Traditional support groups can feel intimidating – especially if the idea of sitting in a circle and talking is overwhelming. That’s why Craft n Chat takes a different approach. Each session is built around a simple, low-pressure craft activity like painting, collaging, or easy DIY projects – and participants are always welcome to bring their own creative projects from home if they prefer.
The goal isn’t to be “good” at crafting – it’s to have something with your hands while connecting with others who truly understand what it’s like to live in a world that can be overstimulating or isolating.
What to Expect at a Craft n Chat Session
Each session is a gentle blend of creativity and connection. We start with a relaxed crafting activity, which gives everyone something to focus on and helps ease any social pressure. As we create, the conversation flows naturally. There’s no pressure to talk, but there’s always space if you want to share.
Discussions often center around what’s on your mind or heart – things you’ve been thinking about, personal reflections, shared experiences, or anything you feel others might relate to. Sometimes it’s deep, sometimes it’s light, and sometimes it’s just about enjoying quiet company. You’re welcome to participate in whatever way feels right for you.
Come As You Are
At Craft n Chat, we honor your lived experience. We believe that creativity is a powerful tool for self-expression and connections and that you shouldn’t have to mask or explain who you are to be accepted.
You don’t have to go through this alone. Come as you are and craft a little community with us.
