Understanding Occupational Therapy: Supporting Children in Everyday Life

April is Occupational Therapy Month, a time to recognize the important role Occupational Therapy plays in helping children build independence, confidence, and the skills needed for everyday life.

At the Grant a Gift Autism Foundation – Ackerman Center, Occupational Therapy focuses on helping children participate in the activities that matter most to them and their families. We are proud to share that these services have expanded from our Rancho location to our newly opened Henderson location, increasing access to care for more families in our community.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy supports participation in daily life. “Occupations” are the activities individuals need to do, want to do, and are expected to do each day.

For children, this includes playing, socializing, following routines, and participating in self-care.

When challenges arise in these areas, it can affect a child’s ability to engage and feel confident. Occupational Therapy helps build the skills needed to navigate these everyday experiences.

What Does Occupational Therapy Support?

Our therapists support children in areas such as:

  •  Sensory processing and regulation

  • Fine and gross motor development

  • Social-emotional skills

  • Visual motor integration

  • Daily living skills

Services are individualized to meet each child’s strengths, needs, and developmental stage.

Why Occupational Therapy Matters

Challenges with sensory processing, coordination, or routines can impact a child’s ability to participate at home, school, and in the community.

Occupational Therapy helps reduce these barriers by building foundational skills, supporting regulation, and adapting tasks and environments to better meet each child’s needs.

The goal is meaningful participation in everyday life.

What to Expect

The process begins with an evaluation that includes observation, caregiver input, and assessment of developmental and sensory needs.

From there, therapists collaborate with families to set goals and create a plan tailored to the child. Sessions use play-based, clinically guided interventions to support skill development in a natural and engaging way.

A Family-Centered Approach

Caregivers are an essential part of the process. We work closely with families to support progress beyond sessions and into daily routines.
